REGITRA TO JOIN THE EUROPEAN UNION DRIVING LICENCE NETWORK
Regitra is already planning on joining the European Union driving license network (RESPER) this March. The RESPER network was established for implementation of Directive 2006/126/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, which defines the exchange of driving licence information in the European Union.
Joining this system will make the exchange of information with other member countries more effective, and will also ensure that individuals are issued no more than one driving license. Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden have already joined RESPER, yet the majority of EU countries still have not.
At the moment, institutions interested in driving licences issued by Regitra can easily carry out checks in the Information about Driving Licences section of the Regitra website. This service receives numerous foreign requests.
When the authenticity of a driving licence issued in an EU or EEA Member State raises doubts (i.e. suspicion that the licence is forged), Regitra sends an enquiry to the respective EU or EEA Member State, requesting that the competent authority provide information confirming authenticity of the driving licence.
The EUCARIS system which is currently being used provides for the exchange of driving licence information with 10 member states; however, the new system (RESPER) will have a much broader range of applications, and will be mandatory for all EU Member States.
